ABOUT

Robert M. Goodman is an Emmy nominated director, cinematographer, and filmmaker with credits in documentary, commercial, episodic, and feature production. Years of struggle with manuals written for engineers trying to discover how to best use cameras lead him to create the Goodman’s Guide series, the first references to explain how to use digital cinematography cameras from an operator’s perspective.

He’s made technology understandable as a filmmaker/journalist who served as a contributing editor for Broadcast Television, DV, The Independent Film & Video Monthly, and Videography over two decades. Goodman also writes for American Cinematographer, DOX and other industry publications. He wrote the camera and lens chapters for The American Society of Cinematographers' Video Manual and is the co-author of Editing Digital Video, a best-selling book about telling stories with digital editing systems.

Stone Reader, the nonfiction feature he produced, was a 2002 International Documentary Association Award nominee for Distinguished Achievement in the Feature category, the association's highest honor, and a 2003 Indie Spirit Award nominated film. The film was released theatrically in 2003 and appeared on Roger Ebert, Andrew Sarris, John Anderson, and other US critics lists of the top-ten films in 2003. Stone Reader won a Special Grand Jury Honor and the Audience Award for Best Feature (a first for a nonfiction film) at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2002.

Goodman has conducted workshops on digital production for AIVF, Guild of Professional Photographers, IFP, ITVA, SMPTE, Sony Corporation, Women in Film, and at film festivals in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego, and San Francisco. He began his career as a still photographer.
